Proof of identity - Overview
When you open a new account with us, we are required by law to ask you to prove who you are and where you live. This is to comply with money laundering regulations and to help stop criminals using financial products or services to move money around.
These security checks apply to both new and existing customers. As well as fulfilling our legal responsibility, we aim to help combat financial crime and protect you from criminals who might otherwise falsely use your name, without your knowledge
ID & address confirmation
To open a new account, you will need to provide us with original documentary proof of your identity and your address. We need to see one identification document and one address verification document.
You can't use the same item to confirm both your name and address.
For new customers - if you have an existing current account with another bank/building society, it may help if you also bring along your recent statement.
For existing customers - If you are already a customer, please provide one item from each of the tables below. If you are unable to provide any of the items listed, please speak to a member of staff who will advise you of the additional checks that may be used for existing customers.
What's needed for online account applications?
Information on identification and address verification will be required for online applications. For some accounts additional supporting documentation and status verification will also be required.
The requirements for the account you are applying for online, will be outlined to you in a letter you will receive with your pre-populated application for you to sign. The required documentation should be sent back, with the signed application form, in the pre-paid envelope provided to you.
Please note that if your account is not opened within 28 days of you applying online, you will have to reapply for your account.
