Strong Customer Authentication (SCA)

We’re introducing Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) to help reduce online fraud. With the increasing amount of payments being made online, using contactless or through Bankline, extra protection will help customers stay safe and secure.

SCA, also referred to as Two Factor Authentication (2FA) means authentication is based on the use of two or more of the follow elements:

  • Knowledge: something only you know for example, a password or PIN.
  • Possession: something only you have for example, a bank card.
  • Inherence: something unique to you for example, fingerprints

If one of these elements is compromised, it won't affect the others as 2FA is designed to protect you.

We’ll never contact you unexpectedly to ask for your PIN, full password or to move money to another account. You should only give out personal or financial details if you’re using a service and are expecting that service provider to contact you.

What you need to do

You need to make sure we have your correct details. If you use Anytime Banking or Bankline, you can update your details there. If not, get in touch by popping into branch or giving us a call. 

What this means for your business

When making online payments, you’ll be asked to confirm your identity a little more frequently. We’ll do this by sending you a unique, one-time passcode (OTP).

It’s our job to keep your money safe, so we’re constantly working on better ways to beat fraud. But we also ask you to be on alert to how fraudsters might try to target you.

Always keep your contact details up to date so you can be reached if suspicious activity is detected on your account.

I'm an Anytime Banking customer

If you are an Anytime Banking customer you’ll be asked to prove it’s really you more often when:

  • Using Anytime Banking.
  • Buying something online with your card.
  • Making contactless payments.

I have a credit card

If you pay using contactless with our commercial credit card, you may be asked to verify your identity more often by inputting your PIN – it’s just another way to keep you safe and more secure.

When using your credit card to make online purchases, you may be asked to authenticate the transaction using the ClearSpend App - so it’s really important that you download the app onto your phone.

I have a debit card

If you pay using contactless with our business debit card, you may be asked to verify your identity more often by inputting your PIN – it’s just another way to keep you safe and more secure.

When using your debit card to make online purchases, you may be asked to authenticate the transaction using the Mobile App - so it’s really important that you download the app onto your phone.
