Opening an account or applying for a loan

Documents we may need to see before opening your account or approving your loan

Verifying your identity

When you apply for a bank account we try to verify your details electronically, but sometimes we need to see physical proof. If you apply online or over the telephone we will be in touch if we require any further information from you. You can provide this documentation in one of three ways:

You'll receive an application pack in the post detailing exactly what documents we require. Simply visit your local branch where your documents will be validated and your application completed.

You can return your documents along with your signed application form using the freepost envelope provided in your application pack. Your identity document will need to be certified first.

How to certify your documents

How to certify your documents

  • Documents must be certified by a member of Ulster Bank staff, a solicitor, accountant or notary public
  • The documentation must be photocopied and certified as a true copy using the wording “original sighted” and be signed, dated and branded (if available)
  • All certifications must include the name and position of the certifier, the Firm/Institution they represent and details of their regulated professional body membership

We have two services DigiDocs and HooYu which can be used for selected personal products to verify your proof of ID and address verification.

 

 

It’s important that you only provide documents from the lists below - providing incorrect ID will mean that we will be unable to open your account.

Proof of identity

We require one valid and original item from the list below to verify your identity:

  • Current valid signed Passport
  • Full Republic of Ireland/United Kingdom/Northern Ireland driving licence or provisional licence
  • Medical Card (18 and under only)*

* Not acceptable for online applications

  • National Identity Card including photograph*
  • Garda Identification Form (ML 10 Form)*
  • Birth Certificate (18 and under only)*

 

Proof of address

We require valid and original items from the list below to confirm your address:

You can use your driving or provisional license as proof of address provided you have not used it as proof of identification. (Not suitable for online applications.)

Must be less than six months old. We are unable to accept:

  • Store card statements
  • Ulster Bank statements
  • Duplicate statements
  • Credit Card statements showing full 16 digit number

Must be less than 12 months old. Excludes Ulster Bank statements.

Icon expand Utility bill - gas, landline telephone or electric bill / statement

Must be less than six months old. We are unable to accept:

  • Mobile telephone bills
  • TV licences
  • A bill that is addressed to a different address to where the utility is being provided
  • A delivery bill for oil, coal or logs

Must be issued within the last 12 months. (Not suitable for online applications.)

Icon expand Current balancing statement from revenue commissioners

Balancing statements can be for any tax year but must be issued within the last 6 months. (Not suitable for online applications.)

Must be less than  six months old or valid for the current/next tax year. Acceptable documents include notice of tax coding, tax rebate and working family tax credit. (Not suitable for online applications.)

We are unable to accept the following documents:

  • Statements relating to VAT accounts
  • P60s or P45s

If the child is unable to provide address verification documents in their own name, we can accept those of a parent/guardian provided the surname and address are exactly the same.

If you have a different surname, we will need to see a legal document such as a long birth certificate.

(Not suitable for online applications.)

One original document to verify your Personal Public Service Number (PPSN)/ Individual Tax Reference Number (TRN) (photocopy must be certified if you are posting it to us)

 

 

Proof of PPSN/TRN

For any lending of €500 or above we require one valid and original item from the list below to confirm your PPSN/TRN:

If you reside in the Republic of Ireland you need to provide one of the following documents:

  • Any correspondence from the Department of Social Protection or the Revenue Commissioners addressed to you showing your PPSN (excluding the Public Service Card)
  • P21, Tax Assessment or Notice of Tax Credits
  • Receipt of Social Welfare Payment
  • Medical Card / Drug Payment Scheme (DPS) Card
  • Payslip, P60/P45

Icon expand Individual Tax Reference Number Verification Documents

If you reside in the Republic of Ireland and don’t have a PPSN but do have an Individual Tax Reference Number from a different jurisdiction please provide one of the following documents:

  • Any correspondence from a government department which shows your Individual Tax Reference Number
  • Passport confirming your Individual Tax Reference Number

 

Proof of student status

We require one original item from the list below to confirm your student status. It must be valid for the current academic year and issued within the last six months.

Proof of affordability

For loans, credit card and current account applications we may require some of the documentation below to verify your income. Your application pack will detail exactly what we require.

  • A payslip (no more than eight weeks old)
  • Three month's bank statements (last transaction date no more than eight weeks ago)
  • One month's statement for each credit card held (dated within the last 40 days)
  • Proof of mortgage/rental payments If not paid from your existing bank account with us.
  • Statements for any other existing finance agreements Showing the balance of borrowing with other financial institutions.
  • One month's statement for any credit union accounts (if applicable), dated within the last 40 days

Documents we are unable to accept for proof of identity and address

  • Store card statements
  • Ulster Bank statements
  • Duplicate statements
  • Mobile telephone bills
  • TV licences
  • A delivery bill for oil, coal or logs
  • Statements relating to VAT accounts
  • P60s or P45s
  • A bill that is addressed to a different address to where the utility is being provided
